DESCRIPTION:1st Floor \nPaint Dover \nOctober 7 – October 25 \nPaint Dover brings together artists from across the region to capture the character of Delaware’s capital city through plein air painting\, the tradition of creating artwork outdoors and directly from observation. \nOver three days\, participating artists take to the streets of downtown Dover\, transforming familiar buildings\, public spaces\, streetscapes\, and quiet corners into original works of art. Throughout the event\, the public is invited to encounter the artists at work\, watch paintings develop in real time\, and experience firsthand how each artist interprets the city through color\, composition\, light\, and perspective. \nThat live creative process\, which takes placed from October 7 – 11\, is an essential part of Paint Dover. Visitors have the opportunity not only to see the finished works in the Museum\, but also to witness how those works come together\, from the first marks on the surface to the final details. \nThe resulting exhibition at The Biggs celebrates both the artists and the city that inspired them. Each work offers a distinct perspective on Dover\, revealing everyday beauty that can easily go unnoticed. \nCreated during Paint Dover and its fast-paced Quick Draw\, the works on view invite visitors to experience Dover from two perspectives: first as the artists see and create it in real time\, and then through the completed works gathered together in the Museum.

SUMMARY:BEFORE WORDS: The Art of Peter Paone 
DESCRIPTION:3rd Floor \nBEFORE WORDS: The Art of Peter Paone  \nOctober 8\, 2026 – April 25\, 2027  \nA celebrated painter and printmaker\, Paone established and chaired the printmaking department at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, where he taught for more than 30 years.  His work has been featured in recent exhibitions at the Brandywine Museum of Art\, the Michener Art Museum\, and Woodmere Art Museum.  This groundbreaking exhibition at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover\, Delaware\, is the first to focus on his watercolors.  Though Paone has been building portfolios of these works since the 1970s\, many have never been shown publicly.  His images are surreal and fantastical\, drawing on art historical references with a touch of macabre humor to develop a cast of characters inhabiting a world entirely his own.  Showcasing approximately 75 works\, this exhibition and its related publication serve as a retrospective of Paone’s work in this medium.    \nAs Paone described these images\, they are “waiting for a story to be written about them\, the reverse of illustration.”  Programming around the exhibition will focus on storytelling and cultivate a multidisciplinary approach\, inviting writers and members of the public to develop their own tales for these images that exist Before Words.      \n  \nThis show was developed in dialogue with the artist before his passing in May 2026 and marks the final exhibition to which he contributed.  The opening reception will take place shortly after what would have been his 90th birthday.    \n\n		\n		\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		\n\nAll images courtesy of the artist’s estate.
