SUMMARY: Special One-Object Exhibition: Musical Molinology
DESCRIPTION: Special One-Object Exhibition: Musical Molinology\nMAY 1  –  AUGUST 10\, 2025 \n📍 On view all summer in the Biggs Museum Atrium \nExperience the magic of movement and music with Musical Molinology\, a captivating kinetic sculpture that combines craftsmanship\, engineering\, and artistic expression. Inspired by the study of molinology—the science of mills and mechanical devices powered by wind\, water\, animals\, or human energy—this hand-cranked wonder sets a complex chain of wooden gears and shafts into motion. As the mechanism turns\, thirteen cams lift and lower wands that raise delicate turned Christmas ornaments\, while another gear triggers hammers to strike rosewood marimba bars\, playing a melodic tune. \nThe pegs in the gear mechanism can be rearranged\, allowing the music to change. The current composition\, “Marimba Etude (Take 3) + Summertime\,” was specially created for the sculpture by New York-based musician Anna Huang and fits within the instrument’s 20-note limit. \nCreated by members of the First State Woodturners for the American Association of Woodturners’ 2015 Chapter Collaborative Challenge\, this interactive piece won Best in Show and was featured on the back cover of American Woodturner magazine. Visitors of all ages are invited to turn the crank and bring this ingenious artwork to life—on view and playable throughout the summer in the Biggs Museum Atrium!

SUMMARY:Circle of Truth
DESCRIPTION:JULY 25\, 2024 – SEPTEMBER 22\, 2024 \nCircle of Truth is the visual equivalent of the childhood game of Telephone\, where a message is whispered in the ear of the first person\, then relayed from that person to the second\, the second to the third\, and so on. Along the way\, the original message becomes so mangled that by the time it arrives at its final understanding the words hardly bear any resemblance to the original. \nThis domino chain started with a source painting created by Circle of Truth co-curator Shane Guffogg\, whose work was delivered anonymously\, along with a blank canvas\, to the second artist in the Circle. Each subsequent artist then received an identical package: an anonymously created previous artist’s painting\, a blank canvas\, and the instructions to find and paint their response to the “truth” they perceived in the painting they were presented. This process was repeated through 49 artists over a period of nine years. \nTruth itself is a complex idea. Is it subjective? Does truth exist? If it does\, is it a constant or does it vary? How do we decide what truth is? \nThis exhibition presents an opportunity for the viewer to see how information is received and interpreted by each artist\, then passed forward to the next. It is an exchange of ideas that is informed by each artist’s life experiences. Each work of art is instilled with the artist’s personal truth. It exists in a variety of layers\, not only in the work itself\, but also in what each of them have written\, and in the arc that is clearly visible between artists. In addition\, there are truths evident that were not meant to be revealed.\nThe resulting exhibition provides a compelling insight into the creative process. The particular vision each artist brings to this Circle of Truth shows us just how differently we all see the world. Sequentially hung from the first painting\, Shane Guffogg’s musing on the spatial ratio of the Golden Mean\, it evolved to painting number 49 by Ed Ruscha\, who muses on an alternative truth with his work titled “In.” Ultimately\, it is the viewer\, the 50th in line\, who must be the arbiter of what they judge as true.\nCirce of Truth\n[/fusion_gallery]

SUMMARY:Rebecca Raubacher: Horses & Other Creatures
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 14\, 2024 – JULY 7\, 2024 \nDelaware artist Rebecca Raubacher has a talent for capturing creatures in motion. Featuring recent work\, this exhibition showcases her signature larger-than-life horses. These pieces have rich surfaces\, layering torn and collaged paper\, paint\, charcoal\, pastel\, marker\, and metallic elements. The exhibition also includes animals from farther afield\, including African wildlife and works from family fishing trips to Florida. \nCoastal life is a recurring theme. Based in Rehoboth Beach\, Raubacher always has a sketchbook close at hand and begins most days by drawing the shore birds near her studio. This exhibition includes a selection of recent drawings\, as well as some from years past. The artist keeps an archive of her work\, and each sketch is closely tied to memories from the day and place it was made. \nMost work was produced over the last year and had never been exhibited before. However\, it can sometimes take a while to get things right. Raubacher began several horse pieces in the 1990s and recently returned to them\, reworking them until they felt complete. She also recently rekindled a long-held interest in mythological subjects\, particularly focusing on those stories that mix human and animal characteristics. \nThe scale of the artwork often relates to the scale of the animal. Some works are just a few inches. Others—like galloping horses—stretch over 13 feet wide. From the very small to the very large\, we welcome you to view these creatures of land\, sea\, and air. \nAn exhibition catalog will be available in the gift shop.\nRaubacher

SUMMARY:Mary Putman: Art is About Us
DESCRIPTION:FEBRUARY 16\, 2023 – MARCH 26\, 2023 \nFor the Delaware-based painter Mary Putman\, art is—and has always been—about us. Putman’s focus on the landscape over the course of her prolific career has allowed her to probe this simple yet powerful statement. Her paintings explore the vast and complicated interconnections between the land and its occupants. Putman meticulously depicts the world she lives in\, representing recognizable buildings\, farmland\, cars\, road signs\, bridges\, people\, animals\, trees\, and bodies of water from unusual and sometimes surprising perspectives. As a result\, her paintings often combine the familiar with the unfamiliar\, drawing viewers in to visually examine the landscape of Delaware and its surrounding areas so we can see ourselves anew. \nAn exhibition catalogue co-authored by the University of Delaware and the Biggs Museum of American Art will be available on March 2.
