This project was made possible for the community due to the generous support of AARP.
Biggs Museum of American Art has been awarded a prestigious AARP Community Challenge Flagship Grant to support Kinetic Wonders: Paul Daniel, an innovative public art installation designed to enhance downtown Dover’s historic green space.
The grant will fund the extension of an exhibit of five kinetic sculptures by acclaimed artist Paul Daniel and launch a series of public programs specifically designed to engage residents aged 50 and older. These new offerings include hands-on workshops, artist talks, and guided walking tours—connecting more members of the community with art, culture, and one another.
“We’re proud to bring art beyond the Museum walls and into the heart of our community,” said Sandra James, Deputy Director of the Biggs Museum. “Thanks to the support of AARP, we’re not only adding vibrant visual experiences to our capital city but also ensuring that seniors have accessible and meaningful ways to participate in the arts.”
This initiative aligns with AARP’s goals to improve the quality of life for older adults by supporting projects that create vibrant public places, increase mobility and transportation options, and enhance social connections.
In October 2024, The Biggs Museum of American Art installed five of Mid-Atlantic artist Paul Daniel’s kinetic sculptures on the Museum’s front entrance and lawn in historic downtown Dover. These sculptures, in Daniel’s words, “engage the community, making what often goes unnoticed become noticed – the wind… moments of calm, sun, and reflection.”
Following a strong public response to the works, The Biggs will extend the installation of Daniel’s sculptures to November 2, 2025. The Biggs’ property sits in The Green, an ecosystem of parks and green spaces that adjoin historic buildings in downtown Dover.
To further encourage senior engagement, the Biggs Museum will host Senior Days on the last Friday of each month from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. These special days will feature docent-led tours of Kinetic Wonders, interactive activities, and opportunities to socialize in a welcoming outdoor setting. September’s Senior Day, on the 26th will feature a special talk and tour with artist Paul Daniel.
The Kinetic Wonders project underscores the museum’s ongoing commitment to inclusive cultural access, community vitality, and lifelong learning.
