Starting tomorrow, October 8, artists will take to the streets of Dover with their easels and brushes in hand to participate in the annual Paint Dover event. Hosted by the Downtown Dover Partnership, this exciting three-day “en plein air” painting competition challenges artists to capture the beauty of Dover’s landscapes, architecture, and iconic scenes out in the open air.
“En plein air” is a French term meaning “in the open air,” and it refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. This year, artists are invited to paint anywhere within the city limits of Dover, including the Delaware State University (DSU) campus, adding new layers of creativity and inspiration.
The event will culminate in an Opening Reception at the Biggs Museum of American Art on Thursday, October 10, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The reception will feature more than 60 local artists who will submit their paintings for judging and public viewing. Categories include “Iconic Loockerman,” “Dover Heritage,” “Stately Homes,” and “Small Works,” as well as the newly introduced “DSU Hornet Spirit” award selected by Terrell Holmes, associate vice president for strategic initiatives at DSU Downtown. Biggs Museum curator Laura Fravel will select the “Curator’s Choice” awards.
In addition to viewing these stunning works of art, guests at the Opening Reception can enjoy live music by electric violinist Bronwyn Beth and light refreshments. Following the reception, the artwork will remain on display at the Biggs Museum through October 13.
As part of the celebration, award-winning artist Maggii Sarfaty will host a free demonstration of plein air painting techniques on Saturday, October 12, from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Biggs Museum. This event is free and open to the public.
